The Jewel in the Lotus - Om Mani Padme Hum

The Jewel in the Lotus...Om mani padme hum...

I used to have this really awesome ring...actually I still have it...

I need to find it...and wear it again.

This is a ring I came across over a decade ago or more....The writing is in Sanskrit, and the scripture is Buddhist.  Om mani padme hum means the jewel in the lotus.

It is interesting how over time ideas can evolve and become so much more in depth and in meaning.  While this ring or the scripture in the ring meant so much to me then, it has come to mean so much more to me now.

After ending a three year relationship and traveling to the ancient Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, the evolution of me became so much more.  Through this adventure, I became me again.  I became happy again.  I found myself.  Through this adventure, I learned how to live for the day again.  While being a goal setter, a doer, and achiever can produce results, I was had realized some time during the previous month that I was going to drive myself directly to my grave at a very fast pace.  My schedule was always full, one day seamed to fly right past the other, and before I knew it....it was always Friday again.  While this is what most of us Monday through Friday career people look forward to, I realized that my life was flashing before my eyes quicker than ever.

What aided in the spiritual evolution?  Well, not working helped a lot, but it was more than that...traveling to the ancient ruins of Peru, being engulfed in a culture that was so different and so ancient...so rich in history and culture, visiting museums, trekking the country side, driving out of the city, hiking the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, hashing things out with my now good friends that I traveled with, listening to Opera, and reading...a lot.

On this trip I finished two books.  I was very proud of myself for completing these two books on my trip...simply because it had been awhile, since I finished one at all.  The first book was The Power of Now by Eckhart Tole, and the second book was called The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari by Robyn Shama.  The Power of Now was a difficult book for me to want to read because the ideas were so complex, abstract, and deep that I had to reread paragraphs multiple times to wrap my brain around what the author was trying to say.  This made me a little crazy.  Now couple that with reading on a flight and the stewardess or pilot comes on to give the flight procedures, turbulence announcements, expected time of arrival, etc., and your brain just goes crazy!  It's very frustrating!  But needless to say, I finished it!  And I was so happy!

One of the biggest ideas that I took away from The Power of Now was this:  Time is an illusion.  Not totally revolutionary...we have all heard that before.  But to truly evaluate how time has affected ones life...dates, calendars, watches, scheduling, planning for tomorrow, the future, and working, etc., it is easy to see how we can forget to live for the day.  I certainly had.  I was always planning, and still do, but I was so future oriented that I forgot how to tap into the true me that lies deep within.  Well, I have regained that understanding, how to lose a clock, the illusion of time, and I am learning how to be that person that I want to be today...not tomorrow, but now.

The second book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari was such an easy read!  I absolutely loved this book!  It is by far one of my new faves, and I highly recommend it to my good friends!  This book is written as a fable about fulfilling your dreams and reaching your destiny.  Through a fable this book reminds us how to be happy by teaching us to live by seven virtues:  master your mind, follow your purpose, practice kaizen, live with discipline, respect your time, serve others, and embrace the present.  I can't say enough good things about this book!  It is definitely one I would reread, and I already immediately loaned it out to a good friend, Greg Amundson, who loved it as well.

My Love Affair with Mangoes

Well, it's been awhile!!! As you saw in my last post, I spent most of the summer away from home, so needless to say....I'm back!

Well, you may or may not know, those of you who actually know me certainly know...that I have had a LONG LOVE AFFAIR with ORGANIC DRIED MANGOES.  They are my little slice of heaven, my treat to myself, my bliss after a workout, my bliss for a snack, a before bedtime treat...and they go unbelievably well with raw whole cashews! In addition, they have been such an easy thing to grab on the go!  Popping into Trader Joe's for a bag of mangoes and cashews...done; an on the go snack has never been so easy!  And I thought I was doing myself a favor by choosing a "healthy" snack..."orangic, no sulfites, real food, not processed, etc".

So what brings me here today?  Today, I am here to pronounce the end of my love affair with mangoes.  My goal is to lose body fat.  And actually, that has been my goal.  Little did I know before, but am fully aware of now is this:  dried fruit is concentrated in sugar!  Sounds harmless when the sugar is natural and is in fruit...but in all actuality...sugar is sugar!  So today, I am here to say that I have had my last dried mango :(

Now if I can kick my cookie habit.

Quote of the Day

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Allergies Part 2: Pizza and Baseball...and Pita Bread

So the follow up to my post on Gluten Free Equals Allergy Free is this:

Let's rewind to a couple of nights ago:  Tuesday night, summer time, co-ed softball season.  What follows a fun softball game?  Pizza and beer!  Well for me gluten free pizza and water.  Being a teacher and getting paid only once a month...it was almost payday, and I didn't have the money to spend on my usual gluten free pizza, it's expensive!  So I completely caved!  I gave in to the fact that I was hungry, and wanted the dollar slice of pizza that everyone else on the team got on dollar pizza by the slice night at our local Pleasure Point Pizza.

Now let's skip ahead to Wednesday night, Greek Food!  What comes better with a delicious plate of chicken at  a Greek restaurant?...pita and tzatziki sauce!  Neither one are paleo and pita bread certainly is not gluten free...but I indulged.  It was probably the best pita bread I've ever had!  It was warm, fresh, soft, and full of flavorful spices and garlic.  It was delicious!  And good thing it was the best pita bread I've ever had because it will most likely be my last.  Goodbye pita bread!  It's time for us to part ways.

Why?  Why you ask?  Well, that brings us to yesterday, when I wrote the post called Gluten Free Equals Allergy Free.

Yesterday, after two nights of complete gluten indulgences, I was suffering what seemed like the worst allergies ever!  Or maybe it had been so long since I suffered like that because I have been following a paleo diet and making gluten free food alternative choices when I cheat.  So here's what happened.  Yesterday, I woke up completely plugged up.  It was like if I was SpongeBob, I was completely rung dry of any water what so ever!  And my symptoms actually became worse throughout the day.  And that wasn't it for the morning symptoms either.  My nose was plugged up, my throat was itchy, my ears were itchy, and I was tired.  Throughout the afternoon, the symptoms remained, although I think the itchy ears and throat subsided, but I became even more plugged up and dried out...my throat felt like it was closing or limited in full breathing capacity, my anxiety was elevated, that wasn't fun.  Not fun because I am a sixth grade teacher!  I need anxiety like I need 33 eleven and twelve year old students putting glue on each others' chairs.  Okay that has never happened, well maybe once...but only with two students, not 33.  If there were 33 students doing that, I probably wouldn't be writing this blog post right now because I would be having a glue attack...okay not really.  So yeah, plugged up nose, dried out and closing throat, anxiety, headache, congestion!  Was it all worth my gluten indulgences?  The answer is clearly no.
